Poetry showcase

The Cordova Public Library will host their next monthly poetry showcase at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27 via Zoom. This event is live and intended for an adult audience. Participants are asked to bring an original poem or song, or any other poems that they’d like to share. This month’s theme is “Loose Ends”. Salmon derby

The annual Ed Zeine Silver Salmon Derby for ages 2 to 15 will take place from 9 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28 at the boat haul-out lot past the ferry terminal. All salmon weigh-ins end at 4 p.m. Any questions or to volunteer, contact Vivian Knop at 907-424-3128 or 907-424-8272.

Call for submissions

Deadline for submissions for Cordova’s literary and arts quarterly “The Catch” are due Sept. 15. The Fall 2021 theme is “Harvest”. Submissions may include poetry, short fiction, essays, memoirs, recipes, crafts, comic strips, photography, and art. All ages and all mediums are welcome. No entry limit. Art and Science reception

The opening reception and gallery talk for David Rosenthal’s Painting at the End of the Ice Age exhibit will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3 at the Copper River Gallery.

‘In The Heights’

Screenings of the film “In The Heights” at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 3 and at a to-be-determined time Saturday, Sept. 4 at the North Star Theatre. The movies are back! Get your vax and your mask ready to come enjoy some singing and dancing with this movie by Lin-Manuel Miranda of “Hamilton” fame! Attendees must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination at the door. Attendees age 12 and under must wear a mask.

‘The Truffle Hunters’

Screenings of the film “The Truffle Hunters” at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11 at the North Star Theatre. This charming documentary takes audiences to the forests of Northern Italy, where foragers seek out the prized white truffle. Attendees must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination at the door. Attendees age 12 and under must wear a mask.

Ultimate frisbee

Adult ultimate frisbee is at 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the grassy field through August. Free and open to attend. Just show up.

Bidarki adult volleyball

Adult volleyball is back open from 6 to 8 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday at the Bidarki Rec Center. Non-member drop-ins are $5. Participants are asked to stay home if feeling ill. For more info, contact the Bidarki at 907-424-7282.

Local recycling

Fishing web, free of cork and lead line, can be dropped off in the fishing web recycling container at the Cordova City Baler. Lead acid battery recycling is located behind the NVE building on Nicholoff Way. Small batteries can be recycled at the Post Office. The City of Cordova recycles paper/cardboard, aluminum cans and glass at the lot behind AC. Join the Recycling Action Team by calling Shae Bowman at 907-424-3334 or emailing shae@copperriver.org.

Moms, Pops & Tots Storytime

Live Gospel Music

Join Christina Vican and Belle Mickleson in playing live gospel music for Cordova Community Medical Center residents outdoors on sunny afternoons. Open to those who are fully vaccinated.  Masks required.  Call Belle 907-424-5143 to be on the list to join in on these impromptu music happenings.

Food Pantry

The Salvation Army food pantry is located at 514 First St. Primary distribution is the third Monday of each month from 4-6 p.m. If you need food assistance or are interested in volunteering, please contact Katherine Mead at 907-429-7177. Non-perishable food donations can be dropped in the donation box at AC Value Center.

Cordova Public Library

Cordova Public Library is open to the public and for curbside delivery from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. Tuesday thru Friday and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Call 907-424-6667 or email requests to curbsidedelivery@cordovalibrary.org.

COVID-19 Vaccine Sign-Up

All Cordovans who want to receive the COVID-19 vaccine are asked to register at CDVCMC.com or call 907-424-3045. If registered, you will receive a call to set up an appointment as soon as you are eligible, and the vaccine is available.

Ilanka Community Health Center offers testing from 2 to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays. Call 907-424-3622 to pre-register. The Cordova Community Medical Center offers testing as needed at the ambulance bay. Call 907-424-8000 to pre-register.
