Heidi Hedberg named as state’s health commissioner

Heidi Hedberg, the acting commissioner of the Alaska Department of Health, has been promoted to be the permanent commissioner of the state agency, filling the post vacated after former Health Commissioner Adam Crum moved to the Alaska Department of Revenue.

Hedberg became acting commissioner in November when Crum made his transfer. Her name will be forwarded to the Legislature for a confirmation vote during the 2023 session.

Hedberg has been a state employee since 2009, serving in various capacities within the Division of Public Health, Department of Health and most recently as director for the Division of Public Health.

She has a bachelor of science degree from Alaska Pacific University.

Prior to coming to Alaska from Seattle in 1995, Hedberg spent 12 years working for various nonprofit entities. Hedberg also chairs the Governor’s Advisory Council on Opioid Remediation and serves on the Governor’s Council on Homelessness and State Emergency Response Commission.
