Council tabs Turnagain Marine Construction for harbor rebuild project

The Cordova City Council selected Turnagain Marine Construction for the much-anticipated South Harbor Rebuild Project at last week’s meeting.

During the city manager’s report, Helen Howarth gave the floor to Collin Bronson, city employee and director of special projects. He updated the council on the current status of the project and the trajectory.

“The design is on schedule, we are where we need to be,” he said at the Jan. 18 meeting. “Once we award the contract and start typing up these milestones, that is where we get into the details … we are in a good place. For design, there are a couple things we are working on. It’s about balancing (the) budget and reality of what we want.”

The project proposal involves several components in the harbor — including replacements of the South Harbor float system, a new drive-down transfer bridge and service float in the drive-down dock, new South Harbor bulkhead and parking improvements, and new walkway. The rebuild is slated to be underway in mid-September of this year and run through April of 2024.

The picture should become clearer in the coming weeks, Bronson shared. He also said his team is working with contractors, engineers and environmental advisers for the full scope of the project.

City council members also reminded those in attendance of the upcoming regular election on March 7. Two council member seats are up for grabs: those held by Cathy Sherman and Jeff Guard. One school board seat and two Cordova Community Medical Center seats will also be open in March.
