Cordova wrestlers take to the mat at Fairbanks tournament

For the Cordova Times

Four Cordova junior high wrestlers competed in Fairbanks for the 47th Annual Tanana Invitational Wrestling Tournament this past weekend on March 3-4.

Hundreds of junior high wrestlers participated in this tournament with weight classes from 70 pounds to 285 pounds. Our Cordova wrestlers were Trent Dundas, Gunnar Davis, Marcus Holley, and Collin Chappell. This is the biggest junior high tournament in the state of Alaska.

With five mats going on at once and barely any room to walk or sit in the two gymnasiums, our Cordova kids fought hard to prove to the much bigger schools that we may be small but we are mighty.

After two long days of wrestling matches, 8th grader Gunnar Davis placed 6th out of 40 wrestlers in his weight class and 7th grader Marcus Holley placed 8th out of 21 wrestlers.

We learned a lot of lessons on the mat and are excited for the future of all the wrestlers on this team.
