Lady Wolverines finish season on high note

Cordova’s Lady Wolverines finish the season on a high note, winning two and losing two at the Interior Conference Playoffs on March 10-12 in Tok.

Wolverine season ends at districts

Cordova’s basketball season ended at Conference Playoffs on March 10-12 in Tok. The CHS boys, seeded No. 3, lost to Effie Kokrine 50-34 in the first round on March 10, topped SuValley 61-53 in round 2 on March 11, and were eliminated by Tok 55-39 in the third round.

At the end of Part II of this saga, we had made it back to the Alaganik landing from our cabin at Pete Dahl, only to discover the Copper River Highway had washed out near the Sheridan River Bridge. There were no cell phones in 1966, so we were stranded and out of touch.

The Alaganik Landing road was built shortly after the 1964 Good Friday earthquake to provide tidal access to Alaganik Slough, which was now 9-feet shallower due to the uplift caused by that major geological event.

Fish Factor: Halibut, sablefish and Tanner crab fisheries underway

March means more fishing boats are out on the water with the start of the Pacific halibut and sablefish (black cod) fisheries on March 6, followed by Alaska’s first big herring fishery at Sitka Sound. A Tanner crab fishery kicked off on March 1 at Prince William Sound with a 61,800-pound catch limit. It could run through March 31 unless the quota is taken earlier.

The U.S. Forest Service is planning major improvements for the Eyak River Boating site, which is located on the east banks of the Eyak River near Milepost 6 of the Copper River Highway.

Conference playoffs seeding announced with Cordova girls at No. 4 and boys No. 3

Following completion of regular season play, seedings for the upcoming Interior Conference Playoffs at Tok were announced on Sunday, March 6.

Stage is set for dramatic conference playoffs

It’s a whole new season, as 2A Interior Conference playoffs are set to begin March 10 at Tok. Everyone starts out with a fresh 0-0 won loss record in the three-day double-elimination shootout, with the top two finishers advancing to the State 2A tournament in Anchorage on March 17-19.

Lady Wolverines challenge SuValley

Cordova’s Lady Wolverines continue to improve, battling back from a 37-14 loss to visiting Conference rival SuValley on Feb. 23, to make it close in the rematch the next evening.
