Suppressed languages live on through Russian Orthodox ceremony

Anyone celebrating Christmas at St. Michael's Russian Orthodox Church receives a handout with hymns in Aleut and Church Slavonic, allowing them to sing along in these languages even if they don't understand them.

Church gathers 76 nativities

On Dec. 13-14, a Cordova church was crowded with 76 baby Jesuses, 76 miraculous virgins, 228 wise men and a multitude of angels, sheep and donkeys.

Tree-lighting festive despite rain

“The anticipation of the lights being turned on, with everybody waiting for that moment, was fun to experience,” said Jessicca Hoover, programs and events coordinator for the Cordova Chamber of Commerce. “My favorite part of the job is watching this event unfold that I’ve spent months working on. That was great.”

Salvation Army reopens food pantry

Cordova’s Salvation Army food pantry has reopened after a seven-month closure. The food pantry dispensed goods to 38 families during a Saturday, Nov. 23 event, its first since April.

CFRC to auction 100 unique gift baskets

Gift shoppers looking for a shortcut can bid on pre-packed holiday baskets offered by Cordova Family Resource Center. The baskets will be auctioned off Saturday, Nov. 30 at CFRC’s annual Holiday Gifts on the Go event.
