CTC awarded grant to bring broadband to Chenega

Cordova Telecom Cooperative announced it has been awarded $3 million in grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development’s Community Connect program to deliver high-speed broadband internet to the Village of Chenega located within Prince William Sound.

Cordova Referee named to Alaska Basketball Hall of Fame

Longtime Cordova referee Dick Shellhorn has been named to the Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. Shellhorn, who wrapped up his 50th and final season of officiating this year, was notified of the honor by David Porter, president of AABC.

New mayor, council members commence first meeting

Cordova City Council kicked off its bi-monthly meeting April 6 with the newly appointed mayor and council members. Robert Beedle, Prince William Sound Regional Citizens Advisory Council, city representative, was at the meeting to report on the recent occurrence in Valdez.

Subsistence memorial gathering honors repeople of the Chugach

Chugach Regional Resources Commission (CRRC) has been hosting an annual Subsistence Memorial Gathering near the anniversary of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill (EVOS) for 20 years. This day-long celebration is not meant to remember or relive that tragic day and the years of devastation that ensued but to honor the resilience and adaptation in the wake of that terrible tragedy that was forced upon the people of the Chugach.

Gather to celebrate, gather to swim, gather to donate

High tide and high energy abounded on a blue bird Sunday, March 20, on the stairs at Fleming Spit near the new Prince William Sound Science Center. Many gathered around 4 p.m. that day to not only celebrate Ann Solberg’s birthday, but for a good cause as well: raising funds for Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières.

Totems hewn from 850-year-old tree will guard new science center

A pair of totems carved from a roughly 850-year-old red spruce tree will keep watch over the entrance to Prince William Sound Science Center’s new campus. Mike Webber began on the totems in December, often working for 12 or more hours per day in the Cordova workshop where he carved his first totem over 20 years ago.

Allison wins Cordova mayoral race by 2 votes

Cordova City Council voted unanimously Wednesday, March 16, to certify the results of the 2022 mayoral election in favor of candidate David Allison.
