Fast ferry will run while Aurora gets overhaul

Fast ferry service is coming to Cordova when the Alaska Marine Highway System moves into its fall schedule on Oct. 1.

The Aurora, which provides regular ferry service for the route between Whittier, Cordova and Valdez, is scheduled for its annual overhaul from the end of September through mid-October, according to Jeremy Woodrow, communications officer for the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.

While the Aurora is getting an overhaul, marine highway transport for the Cordova area will be provided by one of two fast ferry vessels, the Fairweather or Chenega, Woodrow said Aug. 2.

AMHS ferries provide transportation to and from Cordova four days a week in summer months and that service will continue through winter months. Travel on the Aurora from Cordova to Whittier averages about six hours and 45 minutes, while the same trip on the fast ferry takes about three hours and 15 minutes, he said.
