Ailing mariner rescued southwest of Adak

An ailing 27-year-old crew member aboard the bulk carrier Snowy was medevaced by a U.S. Coast Guard crew on Dec. 23 from 122 miles southwest of Adak, in the Aleutian Chain.

A Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopter crew lifted the patient from the 652-foot Liberia flagged vessel and transported him to Adak, to a LifeMed aircrew bound for Anchorage.

A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak HC-130 Hercules aircraft crew was directed to transport a relief Jayhawk crew and to provide coverage.

“Having the Jayhawk and Hercules crews work in tandem is essential for long-range medevac cases,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Brent Flanick a Coast Guard 17th District watchstander.

Weather on scene was 39 mph winds, with 13-foot seas.
