Fast Ferry Volleyball Tournament kickstarts school year

Navarro voted tournament MVP, Bourgeois and Butler make All-Tournament team

The 10th annual Fast Ferry Volleyball Tournament took place in Cordova this year, providing an opportunity to break in the newly renovated Cordova Jr./Sr. High School gym floor to serious athletic competition.

The tournament was also the first athletics function for Cordova School District’s new activities and athletics director, Kayti Ammerman.

“Watching our girls play volleyball and realizing all of the work as the activities and athletics director is definitely worth it once you see them on the court,” she said. “I’ve been waiting and waiting and finally it started.”

The Cordova girls varsity volleyball team placed third overall in the tournament, while the Cordova girls junior varsity team placed sixth.

“I thought it went really well overall … especially the (junior varsity),” head coach Janelle Greenwood said, acknowledging strides made by Cordova’s young J.V. team. “Overall, super positive and fun weekend for everybody and I think it was a good start to an awesome season.”

Resulting from a tournament-wide coaches vote, Abby Bourgeois and Riley Butler, of Cordova’s varsity team, made the eight-player All-Tournament team while varsity player Edrea Navarro was voted the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
