Grant will fund program to teach students food sources

A $85,252 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to the University of Alaska Fairbanks will fund programs to help Alaska students understand where their food comes from, and how growing and eating local foods contributes to environmental stewardship.

Students will learn to conduct indoor hydroponic gardening to grow fresh fruits and vegetables. They will also engage in school waste management projects in 12 classrooms, involving teachers, students and their families. The students will also adapt online 4-H curriculum to reach about 1,500 homeschoolers and independent learners in Fairbanks, Anchorage, Juneau and Kenai Peninsula communities.
