GBOS clarifies position on proposed new borough

Girdwood’s Board of Supervisors said in a statement issued this past week that as the community’s actual representative government they are not at this time looking at separating from Anchorage or forming a new government.

The board noted that its five members are elected by Girdwood residents to serve staggered three-year terms. The board advises the Anchorage Assembly and municipality on issues related to Girdwood, both as the supervisory board for the Girdwood Valley Service area south of Anchorage and as the ex-officio community council.

The Girdwood Governance Association, which did a survey on the interest of area residents in forming a new borough, is a private citizens group exploring, according to its website, the feasibility of advancing “a viable plan to maximize self-governance for the Girdwood community.”

Its website, https://girdwood.us, invited Girdwood residents to participate in a public opinion survey through September and to read survey results.

The Girdwood Board of Supervisors notes that there has been no formal community discussion on the topic of the proposed new borough, and that the GGA does not represent the entire community.
