Obituary: Evelyn E. Chappell

Beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother Evelyn E. Chappell passed at 1 a.m. on Feb. 9, 2019 at Cordova Hospital.

Born on June 29, 1933, to Sylvia Esther Williams and Celestine Alexander Rupp in West Seattle, WA, she moved with family to Latouche Island in 1944. She married Kenneth Hawkins and moved to Cordova in 1950. She was well known for her home baked bread and handy sewing to repair the damage to clothing for fisherman during and after fishing seasons. She met and married Warren “Bud” Chappell in 1956. They applied and were granted a homestead on LeFevre where they built their home. She then worked with the family during fishing season and became one of the first cooks in the school lunch program when it was first started.

Evelyn was an extraordinary woman of many talents. She loved her family and held them close. She made do with whatever she had and turned it to gold in the eyes of her children. She had an imagination and attitude that there was nothing you couldn’t do if you put your mind to it and worked hard. Evelyn was an avid reader. She shared her love of reading with her family and brought the world into her home through her interest in literature. Many a night she read the poetry of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and many other stories to her children at bedtime.

When she moved to Cordova, she fell in love with it and it became her home. She never wanted to leave so it is with sadness in our hearts that she is no longer with us, however, she lives on in the hearts of her family and those she touched.

She is survived by her sister Lu-an Ackerson, Hornby Island BC, four children; Warren S. Chappell, Cordova; Karen Chappell, Cordova; Elaine Hawkins, Palmer; and Cindy Hawkins, Colley Seaside OR, grandchildren; Regina Blood, Jeff Chappell, Robert Chappell, Cody Hawkins, Victor Cook, Amy Cook, Cherice Cook, and great grandchildren; Heaven Cook, Angelique Colley, Levi Cook, Katerina Brown, Lloyd Brown, Josh Fowler, Carter Cook, Fischer Cook, Sawyer Cook, Ellagray Cook Kaitym Hawkins, Warren Russell Blood, Malin Dean Blood, Theron Gale Blood, Grayson James Marek, and Colin Russell Chappell.

A private memorial will be held at a later time with friends and family. Donations in honor of Evelyn can be made at alzheimersresearchuk.org.
