Road not kind to Wolverines

Ferry cancellations throw monkey wrench into itinerary

Forced to fly to Anchorage and then drive to Tok and Valdez because of ferry cancellations, the Cordova Wolverines struggled in a recent lengthy road trip.

Originally scheduled to play a two-game Conference set against Tok on Jan. 25-26, the Wolverines instead played a one-night stand versus Tok on Wednesday, Feb. 13, prior to then proceeding to Valdez for the Valentine’s Tournament on Feb. 14-16.

The exhausted CHS boys returned home winless for all their efforts.

Cordova fell to Tok 55-51, and then suffered through three losses in a stacked Valentine’s field that included 4A Dimond and Kodiak, 3A Valdez, Barrow, Bethel, and ACS, and 2A Glennallen and Cordova.

CHS lost to Valdez 68-25 in the opening round Thursday, Feb. 14; came up short by a 52-46 final against Kodiak on Friday, Feb. 15; and then fell to Bethel 51-39 in the 7th place early-morning contest on Saturday, Feb. 16.

Dimond defeated ACS in the Championship game. Bethel received the Sportsmanship Award, and Dimond’s Isiah Moses was named MVP. The 10-member All-Tournament team did not include any Wolverines.

Cordova had won their first nine games of the season, but now, have lost six in a row. With a two-games home conference series versus Effie Kokrine scheduled here on Feb. 19-20 cancelled due to ferry issues, and no ferry anticipated until March 1, the Wolverine girls and boys left via air on Wednesday, Feb. 20, to play a revised road schedule that includes one game at Tok, and two games at both Glennallen and Nenana, before returning by air on Wednesday, Feb. 27.

Cordova will host the Conference Playoffs on March 7-9.
