NPRB has advisory, science panel openings

Nominations are being accepted through Jan. 15 for the Gulf of Alaska seat on the North Pacific Research Board’s advisory panel and two seats on the board’s science panel.

The NPRB, established by Congress in 1997, sponsors and is a lead organizer of the annual Alaska Marine Science Symposium, held each year during the last week of January in Anchorage. The 2020 symposium is set for Jan. 26-31.

The NPRB also supports peer-reviewed scientific research in the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea/Aleutian Islands and the Arctic Ocean ecosystems through its core, long term monitoring and integrated ecosystem research programs, and graduate student research awards.

Advisory panel members have a significant advice-giving role, with active involvement in setting research priorities and defining questions, as well as highlighting proposals with special stakeholder relevance.

They meet every year in Anchorage in April and September

Those interested in applying for this seat should have a demonstrated ability to be objective in considering research activities and science planning and be committed to active participation for each meeting during their three-year term, or overall for a maximum of two terms.

Candidates for the science panel, which typically meets in the spring in Seattle and fall in Anchorage, serve four-year terms, with a maximum of two consecutive terms. Their mandate is to advise the board on science planning and identification of research priorities, and to review proposals and technical evaluations received by the board.

Science panel members will be selected for their expertise, broad perspective, experience and leadership in areas important to NPRB’s research program as spelled out in the NPRB Science Plan, online at nprb.org/assets/uploads/files/General_NPRB/nprb_reports/NPRB_Science_Plan_2018_update.pdf.

While advisory and science panel members receive no pay, the board covers their expenses for travel, food and lodging for the panel meetings and attendance at the Alaska Marine Science Symposium.
