Cordova’s Lady Wolverines launch the 2019-20 basketball season on the road against Palmer on Jan. 3-4, followed by SuValley on Jan. 5-6.
It will be a rebuilding year for Coach Brad Sjostedt and his young Wolverine squad, as they lost four starters to graduation, including All-Stater Abby Bourgeois.
“Our main mission is to be the best team we can, focusing on these specifics: Discipline, Encouragement, Respect and Positive Attitude,” Sjostedt said.
This year’s squad has no seniors. It includes juniors Andrea Vargas and Inga Arvidson; sophomores Gwethalyn Jacob, Jacey Pallas, Cali Sjostedt and Amee Hamburger; and freshman Grace Colliins, Kiley Burton and Andrea Ronkar. Aaliyah Tiedeman and Asha Estes are both out with injuries.
“Nenana and SuValley will most likely be our toughest competition in our conference,” Sjostedt said. “The Tipoff Tournament and Point Hope tournament will be an exciting battle with tough teams.”
Scammon Bay, which topped Cordova at last year’s State 2A tournament, will be one of the teams here for Tipoff, along with Unalaska and Wasilla JV.
The Tipoff will be Cordova’s first home games, on Jan. 16-18.
Following Tipoff, Cordova will be on the road until late in the season, when they close out Conference play with three sets of games here, versus Nenana on Feb. 21-22, Tok on Feb. 28-29, and Glennallen on March 6-7.
“We’re looking forward to having a great, fun season and working with our new assistant coach, Stacie Chappell,” Sjostedt said.
