A federal office building in Anchorage was partially evacuated after security officers detected a suspicious package, a spokesman for the Federal Protective Services said.
Investigators later determined the package delivered Monday to the James M. Fitzgerald United States Courthouse and Federal Building was not hazardous, an agency spokesman said.
“There was a suspicious package that was delivered. But there was nothing that was deemed hazardous after X-rays and the bomb squad folks looked at it,” said Rob Sperling, director of communications and engagement, from his office in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday. “But the incident is still fully under investigation.”
When the package was delivered, security personnel sent it through an X-ray machine, Sperling said.
“There were enough shapes and stuff like that that they saw on the screen that they determined, ‘Hey, something’s not right here,’” he said. “Upon further investigation, they determined, hey, this is something that warrants more of response, which is when Alaska PD was called in. Federal Protective Services, U.S. Marshal, FBI, a number of other agencies, all responded to help support this incident.”
The building was partially evacuated at around 3:30 p.m., Sperling said.
He did not know what the package contained or who sent it. No more information was expected Tuesday, he said.
“I don’t expect anything for several days,” he said.
