Grants to fight domestic violence total $4M+

Justice Department officials have awarded over $4 million in grants to various state, Alaska Native and community organizations under the Rural Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Dating Violence and Stalking Grant Program.

The Alaska Native Justice Center received $750,000, in partnership with Cook Inlet Tribal Council, to continue to provide culturally specific direct services to Alaska Native and American Indian victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in the southcentral Cook Inlet region.

Aiding Women in Abuse and Rape Emergencies (AWARE), in partnership with the Alaska Legal Services Corp., will receive $636,020 to continue to provide comprehensive, wrap-around legal and supportive services to empower victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in communities in northern Southeast Alaska.

The Tundra Women’s Coalition was awarded $500,000 in partnership with the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corp. to provide services to adult and child victims of sexual assault who seek help through the Tundra Women’s Coalition Children’s Advocacy Center and its Sexual Assault Response and Coordinated Community Response to Domestic Violence Teams.

Other award winners include Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, $499,951; Aleut Community of St. Paul Island Tribal Government, $499,987; Kawerak, Inc., $498,555; SAFE (Safe and Fear Free Environment, $449,716; and Women in Safe Homes, $427,699.

The grants were announced by Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska.
