NPRB invites nominations for Arctic region advisory panel seat

Nominations, including self-nominations, are being accepted until Dec. 16 to fill an advisory panel seat for the Arctic region on the North Pacific Research Board.

The panel represents stakeholders, user groups and other interested parties from the Arctic, Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea regions.

All appointments are for three years, with a maximum of two consecutive terms. Nominees will be considered and appointed by the board to begin their three-year term in April 2022.

The NPRB, established by Congress in 2001, recommends marine research to the Secretary of Commerce to be funded through a competitive grant program using part of the interest earned from the Environmental Improvement and Restoration Fund, part of a large settlement by the U.S. Supreme Court pertaining to a land dispute in the Arctic known as Dinkum Sands.

Advisory panel members advise the board on funding comprehensive research programs to improve understanding of these regions and the Arctic Ocean and its fisheries, and to help to sustain and enhance marine resources.

The board recommends on an annual basis several million dollars in grant funds for this research and advisory panel members play a key role in this process.
