Alaska Legislature stands with Ukraine

Alaska legislators are taking a strong stand in demanding Russia immediately cease all hostilities against Ukraine and urging that at a national level the United States government appropriate sanctions and actions to help deescalate Russia’s brutal attacks on Ukraine.

On Friday, March 19, the Alaska House of Representatives joined the Senate in passing Senate Joint Resolution 25, by a vote of 32-4, condemning the illegal invasion.

“The wanton atrocities we are seeing inflicted upon the people of Ukraine are indefensible and deserve the sternest condemnation this body can offer,” said Rep. Bryce Edgmon, I-Dillingham.

“This is simple for me — I stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and in opposition to the illegal invasion of a sovereign nation,” said Rep. Sara Hannan, D-Juneau.

“I think this resolution helps the people of Alaska that have family and friends in Ukraine who are fighting for their lives understand that this is important to us,” said Rep. Adam Wool, D-Fairbanks. “We may not be able to solve this conflict ourselves, but we can lend our voice in support of the people of Ukraine and to their loved ones across the world.”
