Registration opens for Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival

Registration has opened for Homer’s annual Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival, with an array of events May 3-7, celebrating the spring migration of Alaska shorebirds.

Diego Calderon-Franco, a biologist from Colombia who has been leading birding tours for nearly 20 years, will be the keynote speaker. The event’s featured author this year is Julia Zarankin, author of the Canadian bestseller “Field Notes from an Unintentional Birder.” The festival artist is Mattie Squire, an academic advisor at the University of Alaska Anchorage, who has created artwork featuring the mysterious Kittilz’s Murrelet.

The Schantz Scholar Oscar Wilhelmy will also be there to share his birding story and lead the way on tours on the trails, organizers said. People of all ages and abilities are invited to join guided birding excursions, wildlife viewing, and kayaking tours around Kachemak Bay.
