Nominations are being accepted through Nov. 17 by the North Pacific Fishery Management Council for nominations from Alaska Native Tribes and/or tribal consortia for an Alaska Native individual to serve on the council’s Advisory Panel.

The designated seat has been established on the Advisory Panel to support engagement of Alaska Native Tribes and communities in the council process, and to ensure that tribal perspectives are included and represented on its Advisory Panel. The individual appointed will serve in the Alaska Native tribal seat for three years, beginning in 2024.

To be considered, the candidates must be nominated by a Tribe and/or tribal consortium. Candidates should also provide a letter of interest with a description of their background, plus any additional letters of support.

There are no particular educational or professional requirements. Still, experience in fisheries (commercial or subsistence), training in a related western scientific field, and/or being considered a local knowledge and traditional knowledge expert would be preferred.

As with other Advisory Panel seats, applicants would serve for three years, with three consecutive terms being the maximum.

All nominations are to be considered and the council chair is expected to announce all new Advisory Panel members, including the Alaska Native tribal seat, at the conclusion of the council’s December meeting in Anchorage. The term is to begin at the first meeting of the council, which will be in early February in Seattle.
