The promising young JV Lady Wolverines pulled off a sweep of Valdez in their season-opening basketball double-header in Valdez on Dec. 14 and 15.

Last Friday it was a come-from-behind thriller, sparked by sophomore Katie Pallas. With Cordova trailing 14-19 in the fourth quarter, Pallas hit four straight free throws, and cashed in on a steal plus lay-in to give the CHS JVs their first win of the young season by a 20-19 final. Pallas was the leading scorer for Cordova with nine points.

Last Saturday, the young Lady Wolverines used stifling defense to hold Valdez to four field goals in the entire game, including a shutout in the fourth quarter. Cordova coasted to a 28-10 win.

Freshman Isabelle Nothstine led CHS with nine points, her twin sister Victoria added seven, as did Pallas.

The varsity Lady Wolverines ran into a very deep and quick Buccaneer bunch. Last Friday the Bucs prevailed 53-23; Saturday Valdez won 54-29.

Isabelle Nothstine was top scorer for Cordova with 12 points in the opener and nine points in the rematch.

Cordova Coach Brooks Fry was up-beat about Cordova’s performances against a strong 3A opponent. “The girls had a great weekend and met a lot of personal and team goals,” Fry said. “As coaches we couldn’t be more pleased with the effort and heart displayed by all of our players.”

“The Lady Wolverines demonstrated phenomenal teamwork and sportsmanship, along with a monumental physical effort to be proud of,” added Fry. “They are hard-working and are always willing and incredibly coachable.”

What Fry didn’t mention was that the teams took the long and exhausting ferry ride through Whittier both to get there and return home.

They now have a long and well-deserved break before their first home games of the season during the Cordova 41st Annual Tip-Off on Jan. 18-20.
