Wolverines drop pair at Unalaska

Traveling far out the Aleutian Chain to Dutch Harbor, the Cordova Wolverines dropped a pair of non-conference games to 2A powerhouse Unalaska on Feb. 23 and 24.

The Raiders jumped all over CHS in the first game, holding Cordova to 12 points in the first half to lead by 29 at intermission, and cruise to a 64-29 win.

Cody Sjostedt and Keegan Estes led CHS with 9 points apiece. Unalaska All-Stater Trevor Wilson played sparingly in the second half, after dumping in 12 points for the Raiders in the first 16 minutes.

Cordova recovered to stay with Unalaska in the second game.

“We stepped it up, and played much better defense,” said CHS Coach Bert Adams.

Cordova trailed by only two points at the end of the first quarter, 16-14; and matched Unalaska 11-11 in the second period, to be down by two, 27-25, at halftime.

Unalaska gradually pulled away in the second half, to win 57-47, but Adams was not discouraged.

“That was one of our best efforts of the season. They are a very good team, and a perennial 2A State contender.”

Sjostedt again led Cordova, this time with 17. Estes added 12, and Billy Bailey 10. CHS held the high-scoring Wilson to 19 points.

The losses dropped Cordova’s overall record to 10-10. The Wolverines, who are 5-3 in Interior Conference play, will hope to end an eight-game losing streak at SuValley in the final regular season games of the year on March 2 and 3. That pair of conference games will have a big impact on seeding for the Conference Playoffs at Nenana beginning on March 8.
