Forwards deployed Coast Guard helicopter crews rescued five individuals in three separate requests for help during the third week of March.
On March 23, a forward deployed crew from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak medevaced an unconscious and unresponsive 44-year-old man from the F/V Saint Peter 60 miles from Dutch Harbor and transported to Dutch Harbor. The medevac occurred in four-foot seas, with 17 mile an hour winds.
Two days earlier a Coast Guard Air Station Sitka helicopter crew rescued three people after their 40-foot steel hull commercial fishing vessel EH grounded in Peril Strait.
They were transported to Sitka, all in good condition.
The Jayhawk crew reported a 100-foot sheen and it was reported that the EH has a potential of 120 gallons of diesel fuel on board. The grounding is under investigation.
A 42-year-old man suffering from gastrointestinal problems aboard a bulk carrier about 65 miles southeast of Cold Bay was medevaced by the Coast Guard to Cold Bay for transport to a higher level of medical care.
Raymond Dwyer, a District 17 lead command center controller for the U.S. Coast Guard, said watchstanders had received a medevac request from Alaska Vessel Agent on the evening of March 20 and a Coast Guard duty flight surgeon recommended the medvac.
A Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew pre-positioned at Cold Bay flew to the scene on March 21 to airlift the man from the M/V Elpida GR. The route and cargo of the bulk carrier was unknown.
