Fans and family listened intently, often breaking into laughter, as author Dick Shellhorn shared stories and history of his time playing, coaching and broadcasting sports throughout Alaska.
Shellhorn held a book signing at the Cordova Center on May 10 for his latest book, “Balls and Stripes: A Lifetime of Sports Adventures”, a collection of his best sports stories over more than half a century. The book, incidentally, is dedicated to his wife, Sue.
“You think being a referee is hard, you ought to try being a referee’s wife,” he wrote. Shellhorn is also the author of “Time and Tide: Adventure’s on Alaska’s Copper River Delta.”
Referee jerseys and jackets lined the wall and media passes, memorabilia, magazines and equipment covered the table as he showed photographs on the screen behind him.
He trailed off during his storytelling, careful not to give away the endings to his lively yarns, which can be found scattered in the book, along with 90 photos that should stir a lot of memories in Cordova.
