Twelve permits will be issued for the registration permit hunt RG248 for mountain goats in game management unit 6D, which opens on Oct. 1, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced on Aug. 20.
The hunt area includes the mainland drainages of Sheep Creek; north of Port Valdez, Robe Lake, and the Richardson Highway; and east of Shoup Glacier. The permits will be available as of the morning of Sept. 20, at the Alaska Wildlife Trooper offices in Valdez.
Completion of the ADF&G online goat quiz is required prior to receiving a permit. The quiz is available at http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=quiz.mountaingoatquiz
Last year’s aerial survey of the area found minimum of 162 goats, said Charlotte Westing, wildlife biologist for the Prince William Sound area. The maximum allowable harvest will be five “goat units.” Total goat units are calculated using one unit or billies and two units for nannies, Westing said.
