Fish festivities

Small Fry event has activities for all By Meadow Scott For The Cordova Times

The weekend of Salmon Festival has so much to offer including the Small Fry event July 16 with fun, crafty and educational activities put on by organizations around town. Both the young and young at heart can try casting and check out macroinvertebrates, also known as fish food, with the U.S. Forest Service.

There will also be opportunities to learn more about salmon with the Copper River Watershed Project. The Prince William Sound Science Center will have a fish printmaking area to explore the different critters that call Prince William Sound home.

There will also be giant bubbles, parachute games, face painting, music, a fire safety obstacle course and a needle-felting project at this family-friendly afternoon. While the kids are busy playing games and learning about salmon and the ecosystem, parents can learn more about research on the Copper River Delta, and take a lap around arts and crafts tables to see what local artists have to offer.

A fillet demonstration, put on by Cordova District Fishermen United, is slated for 2 p.m. The presentation will be very short, however. These professionals take a whole fish to two tidy fillets in record time.

Food will also be available for purchase during the event at the Snack Shack. There will be hot dogs, mac and cheese, and other goodies. Proceeds help Cordova Arts and Pageants bring music and art events to town throughout the year.
