ANSEP will host dissemination conference

Representatives from nine regional education groups will be in Anchorage Jan. 17-20 to learn more about the program components and strategies employed at the Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program to boost hiring of minority students majoring in science and engineering.

The ANSEP program on the campus of the University of Alaska Anchorage was selected by the National Science Foundation to host the four-day hands-on conference.

Each education facility will be represented by 10 individuals intent on implementing ANSEP’s program methods for academic and career success in their local communities.

Participants will include school superintendents and principals from minority school districts in the teams’ region, university executives, an organization development officer donor organization representative, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) coordinator, STEM university faculty member and students.

The conference is being held with financial support from the National Science Foundation, which named ANSEP in May 2017 as the recipient of a $3 million research grant. Since the start of the ANSEP program in 1995, the University of Alaska has awarded 600 bachelor’s degrees to Native students participating in the program.
