House leadership calls for Fansler’s resignation

Rep. Zach Fansler

State House leadership is calling for the resignation of Rep. Zach Fansler, for alleged conduct unbecoming of a legislator, says House Speaker Bryce Edgmon.

The announcement from Edgmon, D-Dillingham, on Jan. 27, came in the wake of a news report that a female state employee accused Fansler of attacking her while drunk in his hotel room in Juneau, and another quoting an attorney for Fansler saying the allegations were not true and he isn’t planning to resign.

Edgmon said that he requested Fansler’s resignation after verifying further information of the incident and meeting with caucus leadership.

Edgmon said Fansler is someone whom he and many others respected and trusted and who worked hard for his district, but that his behavior was a betrayal of trust that has created feelings of shock and deep sadness among everyone whom he spoke with.

“Along with other members of House leadership, I am overcome with sympathy and respect for the victim,” he said.
