Injured mariner rescued southwest of Cold Bay

A U.S. Coast Guard crew from Kodiak hoisted an injured crewman from the 107-foot fishing vessel Bering Hunter from 60 miles southwest of Cold Bay on Feb. 8 and delivered him to emergency medical services at Cold Bay.

The Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew, forward deployed to Cold Bay for the winter fishing season, made the rescue after receiving word from the vessel captain that the man had fallen and suffered a head injury.

“Having assets forward deployed to Cold Bay during the winter fishing season allows our crews to respond quickly,” said Lt. j.g. Rian Ellis, a 17th district watchstander.
