Torgerson named interim chair of Denali Commission

John Torgerson of Soldotna has been appointed to be the interim federal co-chair for the Denali Commission, the state’s congressional delegation announced April 27.

The delegation cited Torgerson’s experience in rural transportation and infrastructure, and his knowledge in government small business and budgeting as credentials for the post.

The Denali Commission was established by Congress in 1998 to fund economic development and infrastructure in rural Alaska. The agency also assists communities facing coastal erosion, flooding and permafrost degradation threats. In the FY 19 government funding bill, $30 million was allocated for the commission to continue its work addressing infrastructure needs in rural Alaska.
