Movie night: ‘A Quiet Place’

The Cordova Arts & Pageants presents the movie “A Quiet Place” at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21 in the North Star Theatre at the Cordova Center. The movie is rated PG-13. All proceeds benefit the Cordova Arts & Pageants.

25th National Public Lands Day

The U.S. Forest Service Cordova Ranger District will host a volunteer trail improvement day Saturday, Sept. 22 in celebration of the 25th National Public Lands Day and the 50th anniversary of National Trail Systems and National Wild and Scenic River Systems. Fast Ferry Volleyball Tournament

The 10th annual Fast Ferry Volleyball Tournament will take place at the Cordova Jr./Sr. High School with games starting at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21 and ending Saturday, Sept. 22.

Saturday Market

The Saturday Market, featuring up to 18 vendors, will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Masonic Lodge. The monthly market will take place on the third Saturday of every month. This month will feature a variety of vendors selling items including pizza slices from Northern Delights, antiques, clothing, fabrics, jewelry, cosmetics, and more. Future markets will include pottery, a photo booth, and more. For those interested in becoming a vendor, contact Jessicca Morningstar on Facebook or at 907-429-7997. She is always looking for new vendors. The vendor fee costs $25.

‘Alaska Goes to Hollywood’

The Cordova Historical Society and Museum presents “Alaska Goes to Hollywood” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24 at the Copper River Gallery in the Cordova Center. Learn about the movie industry at the early part of the 20th century and the roll Cordova played in the industry.

Mug-Up begins again

Mug-Up, formerly Senior Books and Coffee, will begin again from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25 at the fireplace in the Cordova Public Library. Join the library staff for introductions to new books, new magazines, or a featured genre, plus brain games. Learn what’s new at the library while enjoying coffee and a treat. All ages are welcome.

Knit Lit Book Club

The Knit Lit Book Club will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25 at the Cordova Public Library’s fireplace. Bring your knitting and join in the discussions of books read and chosen by the group.

PWSSC Tuesday Night Talk

The Prince William Sound Science Center will host a Tuesday Night Talk at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25 on the third floor of the U.S. Forest Service building. The talk, “Rural access and entry opportunities in the Pacific halibut and sablefish IFQ fisheries”, will be presented by Sarah Marrinan and Marysia Szymkowiak.

NOAA Fishing Families Workshop

A NOAA Fishing Families Workshop will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26 in the Education Room at the Cordova Center. The workshop will be the seventh in a series of such events hosted by Marysia Szymkowiak, a social scientist with the NOAA Fisheries Alaska Fisheries Science Center, to learn more about what issues are most important to fishing families.

The Alaskan Paint Night

A paint night, featuring a painting of otters, will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26 at The Alaskan. The class costs $45 and includes all supplies plus an 11” by 14” canvas. Storytime at CHS

Plastic Recycling Event

The Copper River Watershed Project and AC Value Center are teaming up to recycle plastics from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28 at the AC parking lot. Mt. Eccles Culture Week

The Native Village of Eyak, in partnership with the Cordova School District, is hosting Mt. Eccles Culture Week from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 1-5 at Mt. Eccles Elementary School. Classes are Monday through Thursday with an exhibition and traditional foods potluck on Friday. This year’s theme revolves around traditional clothing.

Vehicle Disposal Day

A free Vehicle Disposal Day will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 at the 17 Mile Landfill. A Refuse Department employee must inspect the vehicle prior to its arrival at the landfill. Vehicles must be drained of all fluids, have interiors clear of any garbage/hazardous materials, and the battery must be removed. The department will not pick up any vehicles. Little Ones at Storytime

Little Ones at Storytime, with youth services librarian Anna Hernandez, will be from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesdays in the Cordova Public Library. Join Anna for stories, songs, and finger plays, geared toward preschool ages.

After School Art

After School Art with Debbie Carlson will be held 3-4 p.m. Fridays in the Education Room at the Cordova Center. This program is geared towards grades 1-4.

Patch the Pirate Kids Club

Patch the Pirate Kids Club will be held 3-5 p.m. Fridays at the MorningStar Independent Baptist Church, 412 First St., for children grades first through sixth.

Teen Art

Teen Art with Paula Payne will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesdays in the Education Room at the Cordova Center.

Moms, Pops and Tots!

A play group for children from infants to 4 years old will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Mondays at the Masonic Lodge. The group focuses on exploring developmental issues and building on each child’s strengths through large-motor and small-motor skills play, pretend play and sensory play. ‘Portraits of Nature’ at Copper River Gallery

Kristin Link’s art show, “Portraits of Nature”, is on display at the Cordova Museum’s Copper River Gallery located within the Cordova Center. Link is a naturalist and painter currently living near McCarthy. Her illustrations and field sketches have been exhibited at the Alaska State Museum.

Al-Anon in Cordova

Food pantry services

The Little Chapel is administering Salvation Army extension food pantry services. People needing assistance can pick up food on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Little Chapel. In an emergency at other times, call the Little Chapel at 907-424-3629. Native Village of Eyak administers food distribution on behalf of the Food Bank of Alaska.
