Around Town: Free vehicle disposal, register to vote, ‘Beyond Camo’

Vehicle disposal day

A free vehicle disposal day will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 at the 17 Mile Landfill. A Refuse Department employee must inspect the vehicle prior to its arrival at the landfill. Vehicles must be drained of all fluids, have interiors clear of any garbage/hazardous materials, and the battery must be removed. The department will not pick up any vehicles. A checklist is available at the baler or City Hall. For questions, or to schedule an inspection, call the Refuse Department at 907-424-5600 or 907-253-5601.

Register to vote!

To vote in the Nov. 6 general election, you must be registered to vote by Sunday, Oct. 7. Stop by City Hall between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. or visit www.elections.alaska.gov to register online.

Storytime at CHS

CFRC celebrates 25-years

The board of directors and staff of the Cordova Family Resource Center invite the community to attend their 25-year anniversary and open house celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct 13. Their new office is located in the lower level of the CDFU building at 509 First Street. Opening remarks will start at 11 a.m. with lunch, door prizes and networking to follow. Hunting history

The Cordova Historical Society is hosting their annual dinner and volunteer awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Pioneer Lodge. The theme is “Beyond Camo – Hunting History of Cordova” and attendees are encouraged to dress-up in camouflage. Tickets are $38, which includes membership with the Cordova Historical Society. Tickets may be purchased the Museum.

Cordova Saturday Market

The next Cordova Saturday Market is set for Oct. 20 from 2-6 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge. Stop by 400 First Street to see what local artisans have for sale and partake in a spooky photo booth. For those interested in becoming a vendor, contact Jessicca Morningstar at 907-429-7997.

‘Portraits of Nature’ at Copper River Gallery

Kristin Link’s art show, “Portraits of Nature”, is on display at the Cordova Museum’s Copper River Gallery located within the Cordova Center. Link is a naturalist and painter currently living near McCarthy. Her illustrations and field sketches have been exhibited at the Alaska State Museum.

Food pantry services

The Little Chapel is administering Salvation Army extension food pantry services. People needing assistance can pick up food on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Little Chapel. In an emergency at other times, call the Little Chapel at 907-424-3629. Native Village of Eyak administers food distribution on behalf of the Food Bank of Alaska. Moms, Pops and Tots!

A play group for children from infants to 4 years old will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Mondays at the Masonic Lodge. The group focuses on exploring developmental issues and building on each child’s strengths through large-motor and small-motor skills play, pretend play and sensory play. Little Ones at Storytime

Little Ones at Storytime, with youth services librarian Anna Hernandez, is 10:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesdays in the Cordova Public Library. Join Anna for stories, songs, and finger plays, geared toward preschool ages.

Teen Art

Teen Art with Paula Payne will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesdays in the Education Room at the Cordova Center.

FRIDAYS

After School Art

After School Art with Debbie Carlson will be held 3-4 p.m. Fridays in the Education Room at the Cordova Center. This program is geared towards grades 1-4.

Patch the Pirate Kids Club

Patch the Pirate Kids Club will be held 3-5 p.m. Fridays at the MorningStar Independent Baptist Church, 412 First St., for children grades first through sixth.
