The Borealis Conference Volleyball Tournament is underway at Cordova High School, with visiting teams from Susitna Valley, Lumen Christi Catholic, Birchwood Christian, Cook Inlet Academy, Unalaska, and Wasilla Lake Christian joining Cordova in three days of double elimination play.

Action begins Thursday, Nov. 15, with five matches beginning at 2 p.m. Cordova will play at 5 p.m. Complete seeding in the bracket could not be decided until some teams finished matches just two days before the tournament.

Cordova, with a 10-2 record in Conference Play, will be seeded No. 2. The CHS squad is led by five seniors, including team captains Aaliyah Malazo and Abby Bourgeois. Riley Butler is the leading hitter and blocker.

Top servers are Bourgeois, Malazo and Jieller Tabara; Inga Arvidson has played well at the libero position, and freshman Cali Sjostedt has stepped up as key starter.

Erika Galera is an additional middle hitter; Andrea Vargas plays backside hitter and has been effective as a server. Gwethalyn Jacob and Alana Esguerra are promising freshman.

“We have a very well-rounded team with outstanding leadership from our seniors and a ton of young talent behind them,” Coach Janelle Greenwood said. “We are very excited to have the playoffs here on our home court.”
