Stevens reintroduces shellfish enhancement bill

Sen. Gary Stevens, R-Kodiak, has reintroduced legislation on management of enhanced stocks of shellfish and to authorize certain nonprofit organizations to engage in shellfish enhancement projects. The bill has been referred to the Senate’s resources and finance committees.

Senate Bill 22 would allow the Board of Fisheries to consider the need for enhancement projects and to sell shellfish not needed for brood stock.

Permits would be issued to nonprofit corporations organized for such shellfish enhancement projects, who would pay an application fee of $1,000. The permits would be nontransferable.

Public hearings would be held at least 30 days before issuance of such permits, with the applicant present to provide relevant facts about the project.
