Mayoral candidate commentary: Bob “Moose” Henrichs

By Bob “Moose” Henrichs

For The Cordova Times

I am running for Mayor because I don’t like the direction Cordova is headed.

City Managers are here to fluff their resumes as they move to their next job.

We desperately need affordable housing Cordova. Young people can’t afford or don’t want $500,000 homes.

The trail courts are full of old run down and patched homes. Why because the city won’t allow new mobile homes. There is nothing wrong with these new homes. Some of them are pretty nice. They would increase the property tax base. People deserve decent places to live.

If the governor has his way, many of the services we take for granted will go away.

If Power Cost Equalization goes away it will raise our rates. While we have hydro projects, we can’t lower the rates until the Indian Power Bonds are paid off. Some Rural Communities face having their electric bills tripled.

We are being told if we vote in a $5 million harbor bond the state will match it. Dream on. We will be behind Anchorage which is seeking a $2 billion port package and Mat Su which is looking $100 million.

He wants to cut the ferry budget from $140 million to $45 million. This will hurt the processors and the local stores.

The service we end up with will drive the cost of living up.

What is he got planned for Sunset View? Are people going to be able to afford to live there?

That window in Juneau where we used to cry that we couldn’t manage our money and pissed all away, and then they would give us more, is closed.

Young people can’t afford to live here. No, young people, no students in our schools.

I don’t mind paying taxes to pay for a service. I don’t like paying taxes so the City can put my money in their bank account. I would rather have my money in my pocket.

We don’t need to subsidize CCMC. It needs to stand on its own two feet.

We need a new hospital. CCMC is in the tsunami zone. Every time there is an incident, they have to move the nursing home patients to higher ground.

IHS has leased hospitals from Tribes and provided them with a staffing package. They recently provided a staffing package for 550 employees for one leased hospital. NVE has land for a hospital. Sounds like a no brainer. As Chairman of the Joint Operating Board at the Alaska Native Medical Center, I am in a position the help make this happen.

We need to make sure our schools continue their outstanding reputation.

I could go on.

Will the last person leaving Cordova turn out the lights?
