April jobs up 0.9 percent over 2018

Officials at the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development say April employment was up an estimated 0.9 percent, or 2,800 jobs over the same month in 2018.

Construction added 1,800 jobs, while health care and oil and gas, which each added 500 jobs.

The manufacturing sector, mostly seafood processing in Alaska, had the biggest over-the-year decline at 700 jobs. Financial activities fell by 300 and the information sector by 200.

State labor economics said Alaska had 200 fewer federal jobs than April a year ago. Local government jobs grew by 200 and state governor by 100 positions.

The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained at 6.5 percent. The comparable national rate fell to 3.6 percent.
