The city council has voted not to protest an application to license a marijuana store in Cordova. Unanimously and with little discussion, the city council voted to waive protest at a July 17 meeting.

The application was filed by Councilwoman Melina Meyer, who recused herself during the vote. Meyer plans to open her business, the New Company Store, at 703 Cannery Row, near the Copper River Seafoods plant. A previous temporary prohibition against marijuana stores in Cordova was removed by the city council on January 3, 2018.

In Meyer’s application, she affirms that the New Company Store will follow a suite of rules governing marijuana retailers in Alaska: that it will not promote excessive marijuana consumption, claim that marijuana has curative or therapeutic effects, or use advertising featuring child-oriented cartoon characters.

The Cordova Chamber of Commerce is also prepared to treat the New Company Store like any other business, said Cathy Renfeldt, executive director of the chamber.

“As long as they follow fair business practices and stay current on their dues, they’re allowed to remain chamber members,” Renfeldt said. “We don’t feel it’s appropriate to discriminate against business type. I don’t think that’s our place.”
