DOC terminates RFP to move prisoners outside

Department of Corrections officials will not push forward with a request for proposals to house inmates out-of-state, according to Department of Corrections Commissioner Nancy Dahlstrom.

The commissioner told the House State Affairs Committee on Jan. 23 that the RFP was initially just one tool being considered to address population management and that the agency was always looking for other options.

Dahlstrom said the agency has now identified in-state solutions to address the growing population and will not award a contract to move inmates outside of Alaska.

The immediate solution identified is to pilot a dedicated reentry community residential center to house inmates with a year or less time remaining on their sentence.

The department will also work with the Palmer Correctional Center to address life and safety projects utilizing fund appropriated during the last legislative session, she said.
