Self-employed workers may apply for unemployment assistance

State labor officials have begun accepting applications for pandemic unemployment assistance from self-employed workers and others not working due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, and others who have exhausted their regular unemployment insurance benefits.

Applicants are encouraged to apply for regular unemployment insurance benefits with the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development by filing online at my.alaska.gov.

Those without internet access may contact a claim center in Anchorage 907-269-4700, Fairbanks 907-451-2871, Juneau 907-465-5552 and all other areas at 888-252-2557.

Individual filers may first receive notification of ineligibility. They should continue to file their weekly certification. System modifications are ongoing, and filers will be contacted for additional income verification in the near future, the agency said.

Once payments are ready for distribution, eligible weekly benefits under the pandemic unemployment assistance program will be paid retroactively.

Filers should be ready to provide wage or self-employment earning documentation, including their most recent federal tax filing for 2019 or documents sowing employment or earnings prior to the individual’s unemployment due to the pandemic.
