With large debris gone, lake cleanup targets litter

Volunteers will gather at Nirvana Park at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 22 to remove debris from in and around Eyak Lake. In previous years, Eyak Lake Clean-up Day focused on getting rid of debris such as vehicle tires and pieces of metal and styrofoam. However, now that most large debris around the lake has been removed, cleanup efforts will focus on litter, said Shae Bowman, operations manager for the Copper River Watershed Project.

“This is more about maintaining what we’ve accomplished over the past couple of years, cleaning up the lake,” Bowman said.

In 2019, volunteers removed 12 cubic yards of garbage from in and around the lake, including chunks of corrugated metal, large blocks of styrofoam and a water heater.

Volunteers will wear masks and will work in separate groups of limited size to minimize the chances of novel coronavirus transmission. Snacks will also be provided, though the group lunch usually shared by volunteers will not take place this year. Volunteers will receive a CRWP t-shirt.

Eyak Lake Clean-up Day is organized by the CRWP and the Forest Service. Volunteers can sign up by contacting Bowman at shae@copperriver.org.
