Goat Hunt RG252 in Unit 6D closes

Registration permit hunt RG252 for mountain goats in Game Management Unit 6D closed by emergency order on Friday, Sept. 29, to avoid exceeding the harvest limit for areas east of Unakwik Inlet and Meares Glacier, west of the Columbia Glacier and south of the second branch of Columbia Glacier.

The closure impacts only registration permit hunt RG252 in Unit 6D, with other mountain goat hunting regulations in the remainder of Unit 6 unaffected.

The most recent aerial survey found a minimum count of 459 goats in RG252 permit area. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game set a maximum allowable harvest at 22 goat points.

As of Friday, Sept. 29, the harvest was reported to be 13 billies, and two nannies. Each billy counts as one goat point, and each nanny as two goat points.

With hunters still in the field at that time and the likelihood of additional goats taken and unreported, a decision was made to end the hunt.
