A hole and road closure signs at Mile 21.5 of the Copper River Highway are raising some eyebrows of Cordova drivers. Readers asked The Cordova Times if there’s a sink hole in the highway.
The Alaska Department of Transportation said the hole was actually created by a failed four-foot culvert on Thursday, Dec. 14.
ADOT is urging drivers to avoid passing the posted road closure signs. There is no time estimate for reopening.
ADOT working on getting a permit to fix it, however, the department stops maintenance on the Copper River Highway past Mile 13 during the winter months.
“It’s a lower priority than maintaining the roads and airport in the winter,” said Caitlin Frye, publications specialist for ADOT.
Road crews in Cordova have been busy tending to roads and airport runways because of winter weather conditions, she said.
“They have had a bunch of freezing rain,” she said. “They will work on fixing it as soon they get the permit, and have the time and staffing to fix it.”
