State warns of latest potential tax scam

Alaska officials are warning residents about a potential new tax scam that purports to send a notice from the Internal Revenue Service, notifying individuals and business of a non-residence tax payment due.

The notice appears to be signed by the Tax Division Director.

Such scams are nothing new, says Assistant Attorney General Cindy Franklin. Consumers should always be on the lookout when a notice says it comes from a government agency and that the addressee must pay the money immediately, Franklin said.

“Always look up the number of the agency and call then to verify before sending the money. This is true with phone scams as well,” she said.

The state Department of Law’s Consumer Protection Unit provides consumer alerts on its website, http://law.alaska.gov/department/civil/consumer/cpalerts-date.html, when new scams are discovered. The site also includes information on other similar scams that have been perpetrated on Alaska consumers.
