Update: COVID-19 infection total in Alaska reaches 38,707

Infections of the novel coronavirus pandemic keep rising, with 577 new infections and four more deaths confirmed on Wednesday. Dec. 9, after a record 933 cases earlier in the week, state health officials said.

The newly infected include one more in Cordova.

To date 37,342 Alaskans and 1,365 nonresidents have been diagnosed with COVID-19, for a total of 38,707 people, of whom 149 residents and one nonresident have succumbed.

There are currently 165 people hospitalized with COVID-related conditions, including 152 people already diagnosed with COVID-19, and 13 others whose condition is under investigation. Nineteen of these patients are on ventilators.

The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services said 11 resident cases and three nonresident cases were added to the DHSS data dashboard through data verification.

Four new nonresident cases include two in Unalaska, one in Anchorage and one whose location was not divulged.

A total of 1,099,555 tests have been conducted, with 28,212 tests conducted in the previous seven days. The average percentage of daily positive tests for the previous seven days is 6.63 percent. Statewide updates are provided daily by state health officials Alaska’s COVID-19 dashboard at covid19.alaska.gov.

The DHSS daily report reflects data from midnight to 11:59 p.m., which is posted at noon daily on the Alaska Coronavirus Response Hub.

The testing dashboard has been temporarily disabled while the data team troubleshoots a problem with the testing data.
