Lady Wolverines look forward to new season

Cordova’s Lady Wolverines have started practicing, with second year Coach Brad Sjostedt continuing his rebuilding campaign.

“We are looking forward to the upcoming season,” he said. “We have three returning starters, and 10 girls showed up for the first practice, which is six more than last year.”

“Strong incoming freshman Inga Arvidson and Andrea Vargas will add greatly to the team,” Sjostedt said. “We have two sophomores: Anika Witsoe is returning, and Aubry Quinn has joined the team. Then there are five juniors: Abby Bourgeois, Jieller Tabara, Edrea Navarro, Nailea Martinez, and returning from Houston High last year, Keyona Mattson. The only senior is veteran Samantha Vargas.”

Sjostedt is happy with their early efforts.

“The girls are motivated and have great work ethic,” he said.

Regarding conference play, he added, “our biggest competition this season will likely be Glennallen and their heavy defensive pressure.”

Sjostedt, who also coached the Cordova junior high girls team, knows the season opener against Valdez will be a challenge.

“The Valdez girls and boys are going to be very tough teams, and will likely be at the top of their conference come March,” he said.

Cordova faces the Buccaneers on Dec. 15 and 16 at CHS Court. Since there are not enough girls for CHS to field a JV team, Valdez and Glennallen will send JV girls teams over to play the first games on both days.
