Cheerleaders place first in Valdez

Cordova’s Junior High Cheerleaders placed first in competition at the Valdez Junior High basketball tournament on Nov. 7-9.

“It was quite a trip”, said third year Coach Carmen Andersen, who discovered driving a van from Anchorage to Valdez and back was also part of her duties.

“We left on Tuesday, Nov. 5, and the girls cheered at every game the Cordova basketball teams played in, both at Glennallen and Valdez,” Andersen said.

“By the time the cheerleading competition took place just before the championship games on Saturday, Nov. 9, they were pretty tired,” she added.

But not enough to prevent them from winning for the second year in a row.

Andersen, who is the Mt. Eccles Elementary school secretary, was proud of her squad.

“They worked hard all season, did a great job, and were thrilled to win again,” she said.

In post-game awards ceremonies, Rebecca Dadulla was named to the All-Tournament Cheer Team, and Ricki Reilly received the sportsmanship award.
