Letter to the Editor: Crash coverage was misleading

The article titled “High schoolers recount deadly plane accident” misleads the reader into believing that the contents represent the whole group, with the use of the words “high schoolers.” Yet, the article only shows one swimmer’s perspective.

As a swimmer, I read the article and felt hurt that I and the others, were grouped into one perspective that did not accurately represent all of us. After talking to the other swimmers who were not represented, I found that they shared the same opinion. We felt hurt.

Hurt because an article that supposedly represented us, did not. It did not show how we were scared to get back on the plane, and it did not show how we felt or how we saw it happen. It only showed one perspective. That would be fine if the article did not claim to represent “high schoolers.”

To be portrayed in a way that is not accurate is a terrible feeling and it does not matter who in the article was used, but if the headline says “high schoolers” I would at least hope that everyone’s voice is heard. Otherwise, there are representations and assumptions that go against how I felt and how most of the other swimmers felt after reading this article.

I do not want things to be assumed about me or my teammates that we had no say in. especially since everything in the article is shown as a recount from all of the swimmers, even though it was actually only one.

Sincerely,
