Meet the candidates for Miss Iceworm 2019

Meet the Miss Iceworm candidates

By Emma Roemhildt
For The Cordova Times

The Miss Iceworm Program is a scholarship program for the stellar young ladies in Cordova. The candidates were chosen by their teachers based on their character, work ethic, and leadership. Besides competing for the crown of Miss Iceworm and a scholarship of $2,500 awarded by David and Bootslyn Roemhildt, the candidates will have scholastic, personal and professional development opportunities throughout the year.

A group of anonymous judges selects Miss Iceworm based on a resume, an essay about Cordova, and an interview discussing personal and social issues facing teens today. Candidates are held to strict eligibility year-round, requiring no drug or alcohol infractions, passing citizenship and above average GPA.

Please join us in congratulating the 2019 Miss Iceworm Court!

Serena Herschleb, Freshman

My favorite subject in school is history because I have always been very curious about how people used to live compared to the way people live now. My hobbies and interests are hiking, crafting, baking, photography, travel, and the arts. In my opinion, the most fascinating thing about space is to think that there is so much more than just Earth and the Milky Way Galaxy, and there is still more to be discovered.

Andrea Vargas, Sophomore

My favorite subject in school is choir. I’ve always been surrounded with music growing up so I’ve always had that passion for music growing up. My hobbies include sports such as volleyball, basketball, and softball. I also love to play instruments, sing, and dance. Something I find very interesting about space is the fact that we are such a small part of this giant expansion around the earth.

Grace Marie Reyes, Sophomore

My favorite subject in school is English. This subject made me recognize how amazing it is to have books in the world. One of my hobbies is drawing and exploring a lot with my family. We go four-wheeling, hiking, fishing, etc. I am interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement. It’s mind-blowing that space has an endless amount of mysteries. Is it possible that there are divine beings in higher dimensions? We may never know.

Anika Witsoe, Junior

My favorite subject is band. It’s my first year playing Trombone after playing flute for six years. I also enjoy sports including, swimming, wrestling and cross-country. At home I enjoy baking and cooking. My newest hobby is the art of fish and aquatic plant keeping. A fascinating thing about space is the starlight. It is created thousands of years before we see it,  even before Julius Caesar was alive.

Jessica Wray, Junior

English is my favorite subject because I find it fascinating how a singular word can withhold so much meaning. Art is also something I love, especially when collaborating with others. While working at CFRC nothing makes me smile more than seeing kids create their little masterpieces. Space is beautiful, it reminds me of adventures my brother and I would have laying on the trampoline watching the stars in complete awe.

Alena Craig, Junior

I find history fascinating because I enjoy learning about people and how their lives played out. One of the amazing parts of Greek and Roman history is where the names of the planets in our solar system and other extraterrestrial bodies came from, after their gods and goddesses. My interests however do not end there, performing especially, dancing, sewing, reading and last but certainly not least costumes, are my passions.

Olivia Carroll, Senior

In School, English is my favorite subject because I find analyzing language in context of present day events interesting. During my free time, I enjoy engrossing myself in and learning about musicals, reading, running, hiking, and history. Constellations are by far my favorite thing about space- beauty and history in one. Relating to both Greek Mythology, which I have loved since I can remember, and of course, our state flag.
